GDRNE Northern Chapter Adoption

Thank you for considering adopting with us.

Find some key items to consider before you apply to adopt. If you have any questions at any time please use the "Contact Us" at the bottom of any page to reach a volunteer. We thank you for thinking about opening your home to one of our big lugs.

See Our Dogs Here

Adoptable Dogs

“A Great Dane’s heart is a vast expanse of love, loyalty, and kindness – much like their size, it knows no bounds.”

What To Consider

Electric Fence

While your dog may stay within the bounds set by the electricity, if they have a strong enough prey drive they will likely run past any border trained or untrained. Furthermore, it does not prevent any other animal (pet or wild) from coming onto your property and hurting your Dane.

No Fence

Your dog will have nothing to keep it contained. Without a physical fence, precautions will have to be taken with the dog for its own safety.  Dogs without a yard will likely require more walks or doggie daycare opportunities

No Yard

No yard is not a problem. These dogs can be great apartment dogs when given the proper exercise and opportunities to roam and stretch their larger limbs safely

Children

The right dog will need to be adopted into a family with children.  We work to ensure that there is training of all the family members as well as the dog so that the whole family can survive and thrive for the dog's lifetime.

Strength of the Breed

These dogs are very large, and with their large size does come strength. With the proper training they can be handle by even the smallest of a humans, always with the watchful eye of an adult near by because any animal can be surprised or startled.

Cost of Living

On average you will be spending anywhere from $100-$300 per month on your Great Dane. This does not include the cost of veterinarian visits, toys, beds, treats and any other dog extras you want to provide your puppers.

Still Here and Want to Adopt

Apply

We are an all-volunteer organization with a high volume of correspondence, we cannot respond to adoption inquires until the application and donation received.  Please allow up to 2 weeks to receive a reply from one of our volunteers.

Approval

After review and verification of your application, the information will be entered into our database.  We will call you for a conversation, perform reference checks, inquire with your veterinarian and perform a home visit. We will then seek to find a rescue Dane who will match your environment, once found, we will begin the process of completing the adoption process.

Our Dane's are placed based on temperament, exercise requirements and any medical needs rather than color, size or ear type.

Adoption

Once a rescue Dane has found its match, and the applicant is qualified, we will work to coordinate placing the Dane in its forever home.  This could take anywhere between a few days or a few weeks depending on the circumstances of the dog.  To offset veterinary costs, spay/neuter procedure fees, and the transportation costs that we absorb, we ask for a donation between $100 and $400.00 dollars.

*We contractually reserve the right to take possession of the dog if a breach of the adoption agreement is identified. All donations are tax deductible, receipt always given when asked for.

Our Current Adoptable Dogs

🐾 Meet Apollo – The Wise Old Soul

📍 Age: 6 years | 🐶 Gender: Male | 🎨 Color: Black | 🚨 Not Neutered | In CT

Apollo is a seasoned gentleman with the soul of a wise old friend. At 6 years old, Apollo knows exactly what he loves: peace, good food, comfy napping spots, and a home where routines are respected. He’s independent, well-mannered, and calm—but don’t let his chill vibe fool you. He’s also full of quiet affection and enjoys the presence of those he trusts.

Apollo has lived with adults and teenagers and has been around other animals. He’s now living with a few dog friends and genuinely enjoys having canine company. He’d love to have a dog companion in his forever home to share in the simple joys of everyday life.

💖 Why You’ll Love Apollo:
✅ A relaxed, low-maintenance guy who just wants comfort and calm
✅ House-trained and respectful of your space
✅ Affectionate—on his terms, and when he’s ready
✅ Quiet companion with no interest in chaos or drama
✅ Enjoys the company of other dogs

🚨 What Apollo Needs in a Home:
🏡 A laid-back, predictable environment
🛋️ A home without too many stairs—he’s a “ground floor only” kind of guy
💧 A tolerant bather (he’s not a fan, but he’ll deal)
🐾 A family that understands his boundaries—especially around food
🐶 A calm dog friend would be a great match for him

Apollo is the type of dog who doesn’t ask for much—but he gives back so much in return. He’s a soft-eyed, easygoing companion who just wants a place where he can nap in peace, get some pets (after dinner, please), and share his quiet presence with someone who appreciates the gentle things in life.

If your ideal day involves slow mornings, cozy evenings, and a dog who’s more “Netflix and nap” than “fetch and frolic,” Apollo might just be your perfect match.

🌟 Super Senior: SHADOW 🌟

📍 Currently at Reenee’s Haven, CT | 🐾 Great Dane | 🎂 Age: 6.5 Years | 💙 Dog-Friendly | 🐕 Needs

This Super Senior Sunday, meet Shadow—a 6.5-year-old Great Dane with a heart full of love, a soul full of resilience, and a growing love for companionship.

Shadow has been in professional rehab at Reenee’s Haven, and his transformation has been incredible. Once uncertain and reactive, Shadow now meets strangers calmly, walks confidently with both male and female dogs, and even handles rambunctious pups like a pro.

🎥 [Insert video]
In this video, you’ll see Shadow playing with another dog—one who’s also at Reenee’s for training. This moment isn’t just cute—it’s powerful proof of how far Shadow has come. He's not just tolerating other dogs—he’s thriving with them.

🐶 Shadow would love a home with another dog—especially a fellow Dane. He thrives with companionship, and another calm, confident dog helps him feel secure and happy.

He walks beautifully on a prong collar, knows “sit,” has strong eye contact, and a very enthusiastic (and overtrained) paw shake. His left eye just needs a quick once-over by a vet, and while he has a few senior moments, he’s full of life and deeply loyal.

💬 The facility agrees: Shadow is ready for a home. We’re now actively looking for either a forever home or a foster—someone who can help him continue his progress in a loving, stable environment. He’s done the work. Now he just needs someone to open the door.

📩 Apply to adopt or foster Shadow today:

Let’s get this sweet boy into a home where he can keep growing and finally exhale.

🐾 Meet Freya – A Special Double Merle Great Dane

📍 Age: 3 Years | Color: Mostly White | Spayed Female | Fostered in Upstate NY

Freya is a beautiful double merle Great Dane with partial hearing and vision impairments. Because of her limited sight and hearing, she can be startled easily, especially at night. For safety, Freya wears a muzzle while sleeping and needs lights left on to help her feel secure.

In her previous home, Freya was misunderstood—her large size and playful energy were mistaken for aggression. Now, after time to decompress, she’s shown herself to be a sweet, trainable, and loving girl who responds well to commands.

She has some toy aggression, so a home without other dogs or with experienced handlers is best. Freya needs someone patient who understands her unique needs and will give her the compassion she deserves.

Freya isn’t a typical dog, but with the right family, she will thrive and be a loyal, affectionate companion.

🐾 Double the Danes, Double the Love 🐾

📍 Age: 4 Years | 🐶 Gender: Female x2 | 🎨 Color: Fawn & Black | ✅ Spayed | BONDED PAIR | IN RI

Meet Estela & Athena – shy sisters with giant hearts and a bond that’s unbreakable. These beautiful 4-year-old Great Dane girls are searching for a forever home together, where they can feel safe, loved, and continue to grow into the confident companions they’re meant to be.

Though naturally timid, Estela and Athena blossom into loyal, affectionate cuddlebugs once they feel secure. With time, patience, and love, these sweet girls will reward you with endless snuggles, gentle play, and the kind of devotion only bonded Danes can give.

💖 Why You’ll Love Estela & Athena:
✅ Lifelong bonded pair—always side-by-side
✅ Medium energy—enjoy playtime in the yard and long naps afterward
✅ Huge cuddlers once they warm up
✅ Great with respectful kids and animal-savvy—have lived with cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits, reptiles, ducks, and even fish!
✅ Potty trained and love car rides
✅ Travel well and enjoy exploring (when it’s quiet and calm)

🚨 What Estela & Athena Need in a Home:
🏡 A calm, patient household to help them build confidence
🐾 A secure, fenced yard for decompression and play
🛋️ A family who understands fear-based behaviors and can go slow
🐕 Someone with experience (or willingness to learn) about sensitive or fearful dogs
🌦️ Patience for classic Dane quirks—like not wanting to go out in the rain!

🩺 Medical Info:
✨ Both are spayed
✨ Will be brought up to date on vaccines and preventatives before adoption
✨ Have shown fear-based behavior at the vet (were muzzled for safety), but have never been aggressive

Estela and Athena are looking for more than just a house—they need a safe, understanding home where they can continue to grow together. With gentle guidance and a little patience, these sisters will bring double the joy, double the snuggles, and a lifetime of unconditional love.

📝 Bonded Pair – Will Only Be Adopted Together
👋 Meet-and-greet required for approved adopters

🐾 Meet Dreyfus & Rufus – *Adoption Pending

📍 Age: 2 years | Gender: Male (Both) 🐕 Bonded Pair – Must Be Adopted Together | 🚨 Not Neutered

Meet Dreyfus & Rufus – two inseparable brothers who are truly two halves of one big, loving heart. These bonded Great Danes have spent their whole lives side-by-side, and they’re ready to find a forever home together after their owner, heartbreakingly, had to let them go due to family health issues.

Whether they’re curled up for a nap, greeting guests with wagging tails, or just keeping you company around the house, Dreyfus and Rufus are always in sync—bringing double the love, loyalty, and joy.

💖 Why You’ll Love Dreyfus & Rufus:
✅ Deeply bonded—seriously, they get anxious if separated!
✅ Affectionate, friendly, and gentle giants
✅ Well-behaved and used to living in a home
✅ Make a wonderful duo for a family looking for easygoing, loving companions

🚨 What Dreyfus & Rufus Need in a Home:
🏡 A home ready to welcome and care for two big dogs
🛋️ A calm, stable environment where they can stick to their routine
🐾 Room to stretch out (preferably a fenced yard or large space to roam)
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A family that understands the needs of bonded pairs and giant breeds

These boys are total sweethearts who are happiest when they’re together—whether lounging side by side or trotting around the yard like mirror images. They bring a comforting sense of companionship not just to each other, but to everyone around them.

If your heart and home are big enough for two, Dreyfus & Rufus are ready to return that love tenfold.

🐾 Meet Tonto – The Gentle Giant & Ultimate Couch Potato

📍 Age: 4 yrs | 🐶 Gender: Male |🎨 Color: Brindle | Weight: 195 lbs | Neutered | *ADOPTION PENDING

Tonto is a massive lovebug with a heart just as big as he is. While he’s a little shy at first, once he warms up, he adores belly rubs and lounging with his people. He’s lived a quiet life and will need time to adjust to new experiences, but he’s incredibly sweet and eager to bond.

💖 Why You’ll Love Tonto:
✅ A gentle giant who loves belly rubs and chest scratches
✅ Crate trained and house trained
✅ Calm and affectionate once he trusts you
✅ A total couch potato who just wants a comfy spot to relax

🚨 What Tonto Needs in a Home:
🏡 A patient adopter willing to help build his confidence
🐾 Someone to introduce him to leash training and exercise
🛋️ A cozy couch—seriously, it’s his favorite place!
🐶 Likely best as a solo dog but could do well with a female companion after slow introductions

Tonto is looking for a quiet home where he can get all the love and relaxation he deserves!Stella has been decompressing in her foster home for the last few weeks.

Stella is a smart, playful, and affectionate young Dane looking for her forever home! This big, beautiful girl has a great foundation in training—she knows sit, stay, and lie down, and she’s crate-trained. Highly food-motivated, Stella learns quickly and is eager to please. She’s a loyal companion who loves being near her people.

Stella gets along well with the two older male Danes in her foster home and enjoys playing with their younger male. However, due to a history with a female dog in her original home, she may thrive best as the only dog, soaking up all the love and attention.

Goofy and full of personality, Stella entertains herself with toys and will keep you laughing with her silly antics. She has not been destructive and would love a home where she can be an active part of daily life.

Could Stella be your perfect match?
