Duke

Large black and white Great Dane sitting indoors on a brown floor.

Duke

Name: Duke

DOB: 10/09/2020 (estimated)

Age: 5 years old

Breed: Great Dane (Harlequin)

Status: In Rehabilitation (Not Available for Adoption)

Location: Working with professional trainers (Renee’s Haven)

⚠️ Important Overview

Duke is currently undergoing behavioral rehabilitation and is not yet available for placement.

He has a documented bite history and requires professional training and structured handling before he can safely transition into a home.

🧠 Behavioral Background

Duke’s history reflects instability and unmet needs:

  • Previously lived with an elderly owner
  • Experienced multiple transitions in a short period of time
  • Developed strong attachment to one individual in a follow-up home
  • Demonstrated concerning behaviors when stressed or uncertain
  • Struggles to trust new people and environments

Due to observed behaviors in a home setting, the decision was made to place him directly into professional rehabilitation.

🚨 Behavioral Considerations

  • Bite history (human)
  • Slow to build trust; requires extended decompression
  • Can escalate when uncomfortable or unsure
  • Likely resource guarding tendencies
  • Needs experienced, structured handling

Future placement—when appropriate—will require a highly experienced, adult-only home with continued professional support.

🏋️‍♂️ Current Rehabilitation Work

Duke is currently working with Renee’s Haven to:

  • Decompress from repeated environmental changes
  • Build safe and appropriate human interactions
  • Increase confidence and reduce reactivity
  • Establish consistency, structure, and boundaries

We are committed to allowing this process to take the time he needs.

🩺 Medical Notes

  • Happy tail injury has healed very well
  • Monitoring for possible parasites
  • Previous negative results were obtained through PetVet clinic testing, however due to multiple recent inconsistencies observed with PetVet results across several dogs, we are re-evaluating Duke through our own veterinary channels
  • Goal: stabilize internal health and support healthy weight gain

💛 Who Duke Is Beneath It All

Duke is a dog who has not yet learned that the world is safe.

But he is also a dog who:

  • Forms deep bonds once trust is earned
  • Wants connection
  • Just hasn’t had the consistency to understand it

Our goal is not just to place Duke.

Our goal is to rewrite what stability looks like for him—so when he does find a home, it lasts.
