💙 About Odin

Born in early 2025, Odin is a young Great Dane with a permanently pouty lip and a story that could have gone very differently.

At just one year old, Odin found himself at Vogel Veterinary Emergency & Specialty after being surrendered when his family could not afford lifesaving surgery for an intestinal blockage. Their team stepped in, performed surgery, and gave him a second chance. While he was under anesthesia, he was also neutered and gastropexied to protect him long term.

Odin is deaf. He also has limited distance recognition, meaning he sees best when you are close and directly in front of him. Once he locks eyes with you, though, he is all in.

Since coming into foster care, Odin has settled in and made steady progress. His bloodwork and stool sample were normal, which was reassuring. He is currently on a lamb and rice diet as we work to rule out possible food allergies and support healthy weight gain. He is eating well and building strength.

Odin has already learned about ten hand signs, including sit, down, stay, come, gentle, off, no, quiet, eat, and go. He responds beautifully to a vibrating collar cue and will come and sit directly in front of his person, waiting for direction. He is incredibly attentive and wants to understand what you are asking of him.

He is what we lovingly call a Velcro Dane. If you are sitting, he does not want to sit next to you. He wants to wrap himself around you. He will gently tuck his nose under your arm while you eat, just in case you forgot he exists. He thrives on connection.

Odin loves toys and does best when he has plenty to keep him busy. Food puzzles, frozen lick mats, and stuffed Kongs are his favorite ways to settle in his crate. He is house trained and crate trained, though like many young Danes, he still needs structure. Counter surfing has improved significantly, but management is important. Shoes, laundry, and accessible bathroom items are simply too tempting for a curious giant.

He lives with a male Dane and enjoys playful, sometimes silly interactions. He can get exuberant and goofy, which may overwhelm a more sensitive dog. A confident male companion who enjoys play would likely be a great match.

Once or twice a day, Odin turns into what can only be described as a gremlin. He will zoom around the house, leap over furniture, and bounce off couches with full joy. After his burst of energy, he crashes hard and sleeps deeply. Because he is deaf, it is important not to startle him awake, as being surprised can cause a scared reaction.

Odin is looking for a home with an experienced, steady handler who understands large breed dogs and is willing to continue using structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement. In return, he will give you loyalty, softness, and a slightly dramatic pout that will make you smile every single day.
