A special senior citizen.
The start of Saphyra's story is unknown to us, we only have had the chance to meet her and interact with her since she has been 9. This sweet lady was surrendered to the Vermont State Police in October of 2024, the state police went to aid a house on one issue and in turn ended up with an addition of a dog to their rankings. Once we heard about her, and were in contact with the State Troopers we organized a meet and greet with our founder Melissa. Melissa had been informed of some not so good behaviors or mannerisms of Saphyra by the Troopers and as with any rescue, we needed to evaluate if she was what they said she was. She was transporting a dog to its new home (not a Great Dane - she just helps all she can), and was able to make a pit stop at the humane society that was hosting her. Within that first visit, much of the information that the prior owner gave to the police, did not ring true with the dog that was in front of us.
Once the first trip occurred, a second trip had to be lined up in order to evaluate her and how she did with other dogs - another issue that we were told she had. That second trip required one of our volunteers to meet us at the humane society as for the safety of all involved evaluating dogs together always requires more than one human. During this second meet up with Saphyra and the try out dogs, we realized that the information provided to us by the prior owner - rang entirely not true to the dog that was presenting herself to us. Once we had this information in our filing cabinet the hunt to find the perfect foster family was on as we had a deadline to remove her from the Humane society by, with the help of another local Vermont Rescue known as Potters Angels who shared our post we were able to find her a foster home only 30 mins from where she was being held! Once that was all said and done, her freedom ride was upon us.
Melissa drove down on her last day of safety at the Humane society and swooped her up for her freedom ride to fosterdome! She loaded up into the car so swiftly, like she wasn't already 9 years old, she had her head out the window smelling the fresh air and then laid down for a nice comfy ride in the back of the vehicle. Once we made it to the fosters house, we allowed her to meet her new human friends and then slowly introduced her to the other dogs on property. She did so well that first meet with her foster family, that in some ways, the foster family and us felt this would be Saphyra's forever home but we did not want to jinx anything! And alas after about 2 weeks or so of Saphyra being with her foster family, we knew that she was going to be staying there forever. This dog was not the dog that the prior owner said she was and that we had successfully helped save this sweet old lady from an uncertain future. She know lives with another female Great Dane, and 2 male big breed dogs - one of which is now her boyfriend and they take naps together on the couch - we want to look at this in a different light than a foster fail, more of a planned foster to adopt situation as sometimes the dog does pick the family without us even realizing it.
We wish Saphyra the best of the rest of her life and cannot wait to see how well she ages!
The perfect smile in the perfect home
